Whether you’re new to Ramsey SmartTax or you’ve used it before, this article can help you troubleshoot common account, sign-in, and filing access issues.
New to Ramsey SmartTax?
If Ramsey SmartTax is included with your SmartDollar benefit, you can access it from your dashboard.
- You can get started here.
- If Ramsey SmartTax is listed, click the Learn More link.
- Click Get Started.
- Follow the prompts to create your Ramsey SmartTax account.
SmartDollar users
SmartDollar members may be eligible for federal and state tax filing through Ramsey SmartTax as part of their SmartDollar benefit.
To redeem the SmartDollar benefit, you’ll need to start from your SmartDollar account. The benefit will not be applied automatically if you go directly to Ramsey SmartTax.
- Sign in to your SmartDollar account here.
- Click Get Started.
- Create a Ramsey SmartTax account or sign in with your existing Ramsey SmartTax credentials.
- Follow the prompts to begin your tax filing.
Need to file multiple federal returns?
Each Ramsey SmartTax account can support one federal return and multiple state returns.
Here are a few things to know:
- Unless married and filing together, multiple individuals cannot file under a single Ramsey SmartTax account or username.
- You can create up to five accounts or usernames associated with a single email address.
- Each return must have its own unique username.
Having trouble creating a new Ramsey SmartTax account?
If you see an error while creating your account, review the options below.
405 error
- Try accessing Ramsey SmartTax from a different device.
- Wait an hour.
- Try signing in again using your usual browser.
Passwords do not match
- Enter the password you want to use.
- Click or tab to the next field.
- If the error clears, continue creating your account.
Invalid username or password
- Enter the username or password you want to use.
- Click or tab to the next field.
- If the error clears, continue creating your account.
Username already taken
- Enter the username you want to use.
- Click or tab to the next field.
- If the error clears, continue creating your account.
- If the error does not clear, try a more unique username using uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers.
Error not listed above?
If you’re seeing a different error, try these troubleshooting steps in order.
- Access Ramsey SmartTax in a different browser.
- Open an incognito or private browsing window and try again.
- Clear your cache and cookies.
- Try again after clearing your cache and cookies.
- Access Ramsey SmartTax from a different device.
- Wait an hour, then try again using your usual browser.

Returning Ramsey SmartTax user?

Having sign-in issues?
If you’re having trouble signing in, start with these troubleshooting steps.
- Access Ramsey SmartTax in a different browser.
- Open an incognito or private browsing window and try signing in again.
- Clear your cache and cookies.
- Try signing in again.
- Access Ramsey SmartTax from a different device.
If those steps don’t work, try resetting your credentials.
Need to access a prior year’s tax return?
You can access a prior year’s Ramsey SmartTax return from your Ramsey SmartTax dashboard.
- Sign in to your Ramsey SmartTax dashboard with the same credentials you used previously.
- Complete the two-factor authentication or verification step, if prompted.
- Scroll to the Prior Year Returns section at the bottom of your dashboard.
- Click Access Return.
- On the next page, click Access Return for the applicable year.
- In the left sidebar, click Summary/Print.
- Click View Return.
- A pop-up window with a PDF version of your return will open so you can print or save it.
Repeat these steps if you need to access multiple returns.
Prior year return considerations
Here are a few things to keep in mind when accessing prior year returns:
- If you filed the prior year return with Ramsey SmartTax, your information should pull forward as long as you use the same username.
- If you’re filing under a different username than last year, sign in to the prior year account to access a copy of the prior year return.
- If you filed the prior year return using another service, you may need to request a transcript from the IRS.
Corrections or rejected returns
If your return was not e-filed or was rejected, you may be able to access the current information in your Ramsey SmartTax account.
- Sign in to your Ramsey SmartTax account.
- Under Prior Year Returns, click the tax year you want to view.
- Select Fix Return.
- Click Continue.
- Continue to the Summary/Print screen.
- Print a copy of the current information in the account.
